THINGS THAT GO VROOM

TRACK DAY AT SONOMA

August 30, 2026 by Troy Leave a Comment

A longtime crew member of mine, Art, just bought his first race car this summer, so it was my turn to crew for him. He bought a 1979 Tiga Sports 2000 from a fellow friend and competitor that was truly “race ready”, a real rarity these days. The plan is to get a couple track days in prior to the next licensing school to get him familiar with the car. We spent the week prior fitting the car to him and going through its systems to make sure it was ready to go. Yesterday we joined the NorCal Shelby American Club for its track day at Sonoma Raceway. Weather was perfect and the club ran a smooth event with four different run groups based on speed and experience level. There was an interesting mix of street cars, track prepped cars, and race cars, probably half of them Shelbys and a real mix for the other half. He got a lead-follow for the first session from a fellow racer, and ran a total of four 25 minute sessions without a hitch. Nice start to a new hobby and yes, you can start vintage racing in your sixties!
