I was very, very fortunate the last few years to be able to own both a SCCA race car and a vintage race car. But with my pandemic-induced race budget reduction, I’m going back to a one car stable that I can race in both arenas. The Pro Formula Mazda has been sold, and the Bobsy is up next. The car that will carry me forward is the #61 1979 Lola T492 Sports 2000. I bought it from a fellow club member who was also reducing his car stable, and it needed very little attention to get up to speed. I brought it out to Willow Springs Int’l Raceway last weekend for its first soiree, and things went quite well. There wasn’t too much actual racing for me this event after the first lap or two, but I got lots of good track time to get familiar with my new ride.
As you can see in the second photo, we had quite the wild weather event on Friday afternoon! A pretty good snow squall rolled in and shut down the Friday test sessions until the zamboni showed up to clear the track. However Saturday and Sunday were clear and cool, but with some pretty stout winds each afternoon. VARA put on great event, even with the COVID protocols still in place. Boy, I can’t wait to get back to regular racing…
