This weekend was the annual VARA Big Bore Bash at Willow Springs Int’l Raceway. The November race is the season finale, and this year there were several class points battles going down to the wire. So with the fine desert weather, and an excellent turnout, the 2012 BBB had some of the season’s best racing. The thunderous ruckus of the Ford vs Chevy Challenge race is always a crowd favorite, a couple of Jags and a Ferrari came out to join us, and there were even 42 cars in the Group 5 small-bore race with stiff competition from the front to the back.
During my Sunday points race, I worked my way up to third place, and then realized that the customary two front runners were both stranded off course with mechanical malfunctions, leaving me in the lead with only a few laps to go. I had three of my usual competitors breathing down my neck also realizing this was a chance for a Group win! The four of us were nose-to-tail for a lap when, gasp, my ignition started to misfire, arghh. I had to point them by as we exited turn 9, and I thought my race was over. But then the stumble cleaned up and I resumed the chase down the front straight having lost their draft. For that last lap I drove my heart out, but alas, as the four of us crossed the finish line in formation, I was in fourth. This was indeed my funnest race of the season, the racing was clean and hard, and I shared the track with some great racers. Can’t wait for next season…

Mmm, that Ford! Reminds me of my grandpa’s old Mustang. It got totaled in the 80s, but man if I saw one in a ford dealer in NJ, I would sure take a few minutes to stare at it…great video, btw.
