Wow, thanks for “the rest of the story”, Al. That must have been quite the day!

I was there. 12 years old. Arriving back to the track sunday morning. Not realising that it had landed there the night before. The entrance to the track was at the west end having to drive across corner four. Pointing at the plane asking my dad what that plane was doing there it sure looks weird with tail so high up and that crazy angle. My dad responded, it’s an airport. Yah I know that but that plane isn’t at the airport it’s way to close. It looks like it’s at the corner 9. As we drove closer and closer to the pits . There it was . Sitting nose down. Unbelievable. Apparently WSCC was told this was a criminal investigation and we could no longer race on sunday. But we argued against them. The plane stopped 100 meters from corner 9 so the crash site actually starts from the nose of the plane to the south end of the runway where Bob Pearson kicked some serious ass landing this plane. So in the end the investigators allowed us to race. Thus the world famous image of the Formula Ford’s gridding up for a race.
    Thought I would share.
