Last weekend the Sports Racer Challenge Series completed Round 4 at Buttonwillow Raceway on the new Circuit Course. We were racing with VARA, and there was Test Day on Friday for everyone to learn the new course. It’s always fun to drive a new track and this weekend everyone was on the same foot with no advantage of track knowledge going to anyone. The new track is great: fresh pavement, fast and slow corners, on and off camber, and straights long enough to stretch the legs. The paddock is still under construction but at least we all found asphalt to pit on.
The sports racers raced in the Wings & Slicks Group and also had our own Challenge race on Sunday. We had a good mix of a dozen S2s and WSRs racing this weekend, and we’re seeing more come out every event. A heroic effort by Steve Hoogs must be recognized, as he lost a wheel with a broken stub axle on Friday, and with some driven-in spares by fellow racer Steve Villata, he had the car ready for Sunday’s Challenge race. Unfortunately he had electrical gremlins and DNF’ed but he definitely earned the Hard Charger Award for his effort.
