THINGS THAT GO VROOM

RACE SEATS

September 18, 2009 by Troy 1 Comment

After taking the month of August off to pack, move, and unpack, I’m back to work on the Race Wagon. Yesterday we got to fabricating the floorboard seat plates, and mounting the seats to them. When you order up a race seat, there are many factors to take into account. Some clubs, like NASA, will soon require a FIA certified seat, so look into your club’s rules before you order. Most clubs, like SCCA,  just require an additional seatback support if your seat is not FIA certified. After you pick a seat based on price, style, material, size, and weight, you then need a set of seat brackets. Just about every seat has a different set of bracket mounting point dimensions, thus requiring you to order their matching brackets. But if you do a little research, you can find some that match. The Sparco’s 490NR brackets have the same 11 3/8″ pattern as my Corbeaus. Cobras do too, but Kirkey is 9″ or 13″, Momo 11″, Racetech 14″, etc, etc.  I ordered two seats (one narrow, one standard width), so custom floor mounts were required to have the option of switching seats for different drivers. I bought my two Corbeau FX racing seats from Motorsport Seats, they had great prices and service.

I also opened up the box with my new braking system, and started the initial fitting process. We are using a Wilwood reverse swing pedal assembly with cable adjustable bias, 3/4″ front master, 7/8″ rear  master, Dynalite 4-piston calipers, and Datsun rotors.
