Wow, we survived! Laguna Seca Raceway saw record high temps for the SFR SCCA race Sept 1-3, it was well over 100F Friday and Saturday, cooling off into the mid 90s for Sunday. You just don’t expect that at Laguna, summer races usually start off cold and foggy until mid-morning, then sunny and 70 for the afternoon races. The temps indeed tested man and machine, but I was able to keep myself and the Van Diemen running cool most of the weekend with lots of shade, ice, and clean radiators. During Saturday’s Race 1 the nose box brackets broke on my FC and I drug the front wing around the last few laps. I missed Qualifying for Race 2 while doing repairs (thanks Bobby for lending me your welder), so I started from the back of the grid for Sunday’s Race 2. While I never made it back up to battle for the win, I did earn the Hard Charger award for making up the most spots. Big bummer – my GoPro went on the fritz and I don’t have the video to prove it ;-(
This was race 5 and 6 for the Pacific F2000 National (Pinto) class, our season finale. Much thanks to Peter West Motorsports and Primus Motorsports’ Brad Baytos for including the early-generation FCs in this season’s series. We had a lot of fun and I think we got the word out that CFC racing is alive and well on the West Coast. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going and see some more Pinto-powered FCs come out to play in 2018.
