I just returned from the ‘Hell In The Swell’ (HITS) adventure bike ride with a bunch of fellow airline pilots and a few other scoundrels mixed into the pack as well. We used the Duke’s RV Park in Hanksville, Utah as our basecamp for five days and did daily loops out into the desert. Rides varied between 100-200 miles a day, some asphalt, mostly dirt. We rode lots of dirt roads, jeep trails, single track, and a couple of gnarly sections thrown in to keep everyone on their toes. Ride routes included the Capitol Reef National Park, Black Dragon Canyon, San Rafael Reef, Henry Mountains, Escalante, and more. There were a few bike and human injuries over the course of the week, but nothing that kept anyone from still being able to ride every day (thanks to a loaner bike when my Tiger said uncle). And the nightly lies and libations insured no-one was left unscathed. The drive out there was long but well worth it, as we had fantastic weather throughout the week. Can’t wait for the next adventure…
