So you want to roadrace cars, eh? It’s fun, it’s exciting, you’ll learn new skills and make new friends. You can also go broke. Learn from those ahead of you who have made all the rookie mistakes.
First of all, you need an organization to race with, and a track to race at. So you need to get out there and check them out. All amateur race clubs have Internet sites that explain their rules and regulations, and post their event schedules. Find the next race weekend and plan to go. Entry fees at the track are only a couple bucks, and sometimes they’re free. You will usually need to sign a waiver to get in since you will have access to the pits. Leave the kids and dogs at home the first time out so you won’t be distracted. Your first time in the pits can be a little disorienting; there is lots of noise and activity. Most drivers and mechanics are easy to approach with questions, but do so respectfully in case they are in the heat of battle getting ready for the next green flag.
If you don’t have the bug after spending a day at the track, then log off this website. If you’re hooked, please continue…
You’re going to need several things to get started: club membership, a race car and a way to get it to the track, all the required safety gear, and a racing license. I’ll cover all those things in my next few posts…
