CSRG is sponsoring a USRRC run group this year in their usual Group 4, it’s made up of over and under 2.0L sports racers from the 1963-1967 era. Go to https://www.historicsportsracer.com for more info. My ’65 Bobsy SR3 fits in very nicely with this group, and hopefully the class continues to grow over the next couple years. We had twenty <2.0L and four >2.0L cars for the event this weekend making for some great racing. Dan Davis of Victory Lane magazine honored our run group at a Friday night drivers meeting with a USRRC labeled bottle of wine for each participant.
Friday afternoon practice started well, first session was a warm-up to make sure my off-season repairs fixed a couple issues. As we got ready for session two I discovered the trigger wire tab had broken off my solenoid, so I needed a push-start to make it out. We had to skip the third session as we worked on the repairs.
Saturday morning Qualifying Practice went very well with a 1:49 fastest lap for the <2.0L cars earning me the pole for the Saturday afternoon Qualifying Race. But on my last lap I started having gearbox issues, which led to a day long tear down. We never figured out why I lost neutral (???) but I did find a broken tooth on a pinion gear that led to other issues. We put the gearbox back together (minus Reverse and First gears) and hoped for the best.
Sunday morning’s warm-up showed we were back in the game, so we started the afternoon Flag race from the very back of the pack. The first couple laps were a good challenge working my way through the back half of the group, but by then the front runners had an insurmountable lead. I worked my way back up to 5th overall, and had a lot of fun while doing it.
In the pits this weekend I got to meet a lot of great fellow sports racer owners this weekend, even had a gentleman come up and tell me he was a former owner of my car. Hopefully next race I can spend more time bench racing than working on my car…
