“Are there any racing series for the financially challenged, hardcore budget racer?”
Yes, I can think of two, but I’m sure there are more. Both of these series are relatively new, and are quickly gaining traction. 24 Hours of LeMons is half circus, half endurance stockcar racing, and is now nation-wide. It is hard to explain unless you have attended one. Cars must (barely) be a legal race car, and the drivers must be licensed, but spending money on your car is actually discouraged. The crowd gets to pick which entrant will be crushed (yes, crushed) and it’s usually the nicest car entered. The judges also have a $500 claimer rule, so we are talking budget race cars here. Not LeMans, but LeMons. If you are in Southern California, the new San Diego Grand Challenge Series is another budget series, based on the Grassroots Motorsports $200x Challenge located in Florida. The San Diego series has cars valued at $1000 competing in autocross, dragracing, and a judged Concourse event over a seven weekend season. Ingenuity, sweat, and good horsetrading skills go much further than a big checkbook in these racing series.
