This is my current race car, it’s a 1971 Datsun 240Z. I race with two different clubs, VARA and NASA. VARA is a vintage race club, and I run in the CP class. NASA is a late model club, and I run in PTB. The car is based on the 240Z race cars of the early ’70s, with some later model upgrades. It does run the original size 2.4L 6 cyl engine, and the E88 cylinder head. It has high compression Ross pistons, a ported head with a hi-lift Isky cam, an electronic ignition from a 280ZX, triple Mikuni 44 carbs, a Nissan Comp close-ratio 5 speed OD transmission, a 4.38:1 LSD rearend, and upgraded late model Z brakes. It has the required safety equipment of a six-point rollcage, fire system, race seat and restraints. It makes about 200 hp and weighs about 2200 lbs. The paint scheme is reminiscent of the BRE factory-supported race cars of the late ’60s-early ’70s, with a homemade grill paying homage to WWII fighters. I purchased this car from SCCA and VARA Champion Bryan Lampe several years ago. As I suggest to others to do, I bought this as a running, class legal car, so I could spend my time learning the car and improving my driving skills, and then later upgraded and personalized the car as time progressed.
This photo above was shot in 2007 at Phoenix Int’l Raceway, between turns 3 and 4. My sponsorship logos can be plainly seen in these pictures, one important way that I help keep my budget under control.
Under the hood…
