This weekend I made the 1400 mile roadtrip out to Arizona for the AZ-SCCA Vintage race weekend at Phoenix Int’l Raceway. The Russo & Steele auction house sponsored the annual event, and put on a much appreciated luncheon in the paddock on Saturday. The over- and under- 2.4L Vintage groups each had about a dozen entries, while the SCCA Production and Open Wheel groups had pretty full grids. The weather was wonderful, cool mornings with afternoons sunny and 70 degrees. The Race Wagon ran great all weekend after a little Friday night tuninghelp from Phil Eglin of German Auto Service. A big bonus for me was getting to see my old racing buddies, as well as my Nissan Parts Warehouse sponsor, while visiting my former ‘home track’. Also thanks to the hospitality of friends and family, I had no lodging expenses for the entire trip! Gratefully the last round of modifications to the wagon turned out to be improvements, and it allowed me to get lap times down into the 1:14s. I had a TR6 and another 510 to dice with in small-bore, and got to watch my fellow VARA competitors race their 240z’s and CSL in big-bore. Special thanks goes to Mike Malone for helping me get the wagon’s motor back together in time to make the event. All in all, well worth the required 24 hours of tow time. Here’s a few pics from around the paddock.
